2-Hour Asbestos Awareness Course

This course is required for any employee who may come into contact with asbestos-containing building materials or building materials that are assumed to contain asbestos in a building as part of their typical and normal anticipated maintenance or custodial activities. It is required by EPA AHERA regulation for all members of maintenance and custodial staff and by Cal/OSHA for Class IV workers. The training course must be:

A minimum of 2 hours in length.

Required whether or not the person is required to work with asbestos- containing building materials (additional training is required should the person be expected to disturb the asbestos-containing building material).

New custodial and maintenance staff must be trained within 60 days after the commencement of their employment.

This training must be done annually in addition to the initial training.

The local education agency must keep training records for 30 years.

16-Hour Asbestos Maintenance & Operations Course

This course is required for any employee who conducts any activities that will result in the disturbance of asbestos-containing building materials (ACBM) or building materials assumed to contain asbestos. The EPA AHERA regulation requires the above 2-hour course to be accompanied by an additional 14-hours of training which includes:

Descriptions of proper methods of handling ACBM.

Information and training on the use of respiratory protection.

Regulatory review of EPA AHERA regulation §763.91, Appendices A, C, and D of this subpart E of this part, EPA regulations contained in 40 CFR part 763, subpart G, and in 40 CFR part 61, subpart M, and OSHA regulations contained in 29 CFR 1926.58.

Hands-on training in the use of respiratory protection, other personal protection measures, and good work practices

Types of Lead Training Offered

2-Hour Lead Awareness Course

This course is required for any employee who may come into contact with lead-containing paints, components or paints and components that are assumed to contain lead. This course educates employee(s) to be able to identify lead paints that are in either an intact, fair or poor condition in the building or structure they are working in. This course is NOT adequate training for a person who is disturbing lead paints.

4-6 Hour Lead Training Course

This course will satisfy the Cal/OSHA Lead in Construction Standard which applies to all construction work where an employee may be occupationally exposed to lead. Construction work is defined as work for construction, alteration and/or repair, including painting and decorating. It includes but is not limited to the following:

Demolition or salvage of structures where lead or materials containing lead are present.

Removal or encapsulation of materials containing lead.

New construction, alteration, repair, or renovation of structures, substrates, or portions thereof, that contain lead, or materials containing lead.

Installation of products containing lead.

Lead contamination/emergency cleanup

Transportation, disposal, storage, or containment of lead or materials containing lead on the site or location at which construction activities are performed.

Maintenance operations associated with the construction activities described above.

This course introduces a hands-on section for attendees where they are taught how to identify lead in paints and components, health effects, applicable laws and regulations, lead-safe work practices which are used to protect themselves, prevent the creation of a lead-hazard, properly bag and dispose of waste generated. Finally, this course will introduce various options of personal protective equipment.
